Preparing for our first all-new, multi-unit build

Places for People is preparing for its next project and we are currently searching for an appropriate piece of land so that we can build a new multi-unit complex consisting of mainly 1- and 2-bedroom units.

Solving the high demand and low supply of affordable housing

During the summer of 2019 we completed a renovation on our Cardiff property, introducing our first 1-bedroom unit to our inventory of homes. With the demand for affordable housing in Haliburton County being so high, specifically with 1- and 2-bedroom units having wait times of up to 7-years, Places for People has been looking for more effective ways to address this shortfall ever since.

The pivot to new builds

The cost of homes across the county has increased significantly over the last few years and this has made our original business model of buying run-down properties and renovating them, cost prohibitive. For this reason, Places for People is repositioning itself to be able to have a greater impact on the affordable housing market by purchasing land and building units that directly address the needs of the area.

Fundraising goals

We are currently working towards a goal of raising $400,000 towards funding our next project. Places for People is not funded by the government which is why fundraising is such an integral part of our annual budget. While the rent from our properties supports the expenses and regular maintenance that is required, it does not allow us to grow the organization or add to our inventory of affordable housing.

Our ambitious 10 year plan

Our goal to help fight homelessness in our area is to add 40 units to the affordable rental housing inventory across Haliburton County over the next ten years. Our plan for a new multi-unit build is the first step towards that goal.
